Updated: Oct 26, 2023

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto, born on 3rd February 1898 and passing away on 11th May 1976, was a highly influential Finnish architect and designer. He was associated with the construction of around 200 out of 500 buildings designed by him. His architectural style predominantly reflected International Style Modernism, incorporating functionality, simplicity, cultural identity, and a unique atmosphere. In the notable book "Space, Time and Architecture: The growth of a new tradition" (1949) by Sigfried Giedion, it was mentioned that Aalto's influence was so profound that he carried the essence of Finland with him wherever he went.

An excellent example of his work is the Muuratsalo, which showcases a fascinating arrangement of 50 distinct bricks in various patterns. Aalto's intention was to explore how these bricks interact with natural elements and their surroundings. The garden at Muuratsalo features a central fireplace, creating a gathering space for people. He ingeniously designed "The open room," where walls shield the area from winds and harsh sun, allowing for diverse activities.

The integration of nature and the building's design is evident at Muuratsalo, which is a characteristic feature of Alvar Aalto's architectural works. The harmonious contrast between the green surroundings and the red bricks forms a cohesive whole. The inspiration for the white wall emanates from ancient sources, adding further depth to Aalto's creations.
